Although issued as a separate release in the U.S., The Big Huge is actually the second-disc counterpart of Wee Tam. The set appeared as a two-LP package throughout the rest of the world. Understandably, the albums are very similar in structure and content. This quartet incarnation of the Incredible String Band featured primary songwriters Robin Williamson and Mike Heron as well as their significant others, Christina ""Liquorice"" McKechnie and Rose Simpson. The ISB’s tradition of quirky, and at times atonal, acoustic material is well served by the nine compositions on this platter. The lengthy opening track, ""Maya, "" foreshadows their less-focused upcoming works I Looked Up and U. Although there are a few moments of brilliant playing, the ambling nature of the song overall makes for difficult consumption during a single sitting. The remainder of the record — while similar in unfettered spirit — contains decidedly more cohesive pieces, a few of which are among the ISB’s most lauded compositions. These include the pastoral ""Greatest Friend"" and a dirge-like ""The Circle Is Unbroken."" ""Lordly Nightshade"" contains a few 20th century references — such as Hitler, who is likewise mentioned in ""Maya."" The minstrel storytelling quality adds an ethereal sense to the darkly toned subject matter. The vocal harmonies throughout The Big Huge are among the quartet’s finest — most notably the four-part division on ""The Mountain of God"" and the deceptively simple and silly ""Cousin Caterpillar."" After several years out of print, Collectors’ Choice Music reissued both Wee Tam and The Big Huge as a double-CD set — including the original LP graphics and lyrics. ~ Lindsay Planer

Recorded and released in 1968, the album hit number five on the U.K. album charts, and was nominated for a Grammy in the U.S. It was produced by Joe Boyd, and engineered by John Wood using 24-track technology. Robin Williamson, Mike Heron, and Licorice McKechnie also utilized the talents of Dolly Collins (vocals, flute, organ, and piano), and David Snell (harp). Williamson and Heron employed a vast array of instruments on these songs including sitar, gimbri, pan pipe, oud, chahanai, mandolin, guitars, Hammond B-3, dulcimer, harpsichord, pan pipes, oud, water harp, and harmonica. The songs were much more freeform and experimental. Check Heron’s 13-minute ""A Very Cellular Song, "" which incorporates elements from a Sikh hymn and a Bahamian spiritual. Using the Hammond, a gimbri, pan pipes, handclaps, and other instruments, it begins on a two-chord vamp that employs a vocal round in five-part harmony, with secular and spiritual lyrics. It’s simply infectious. Other notables include the stellar ""The Minotaur’s Song, "" with its call and response chorus played on guitars, upright piano, and six-part harmonies. It melds a children’s song with a drinking song to humorous and utterly memorable effect. Elsewhere, ""Waltz of the New Moon, "" employs two-chord drones on acoustic guitar with a meld of Middle Eastern vocal styles and Scottish field songs. ""Three Is a Green Crown"" is a psychedelic folk song in all its hypnotic droning glory with Williamson’s primitive sitar playing featured prominently. The tender, exotic, ""Nightfall, "" the album’s closer, is a lullaby, with guitar and sitar accompanying the vocal in whole tone intervals. The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter is the most ambitious, focused, and brilliantly executed record in ISB’s catalog. ~ Thom Jurek

In 1972, Michael Viner was an executive at MGM Records. Asked to put together some music for the soundtrack of an upcoming B-movie horror film, The Thing with Two Heads, he called on songwriter Perry Botkin, Jr., and the two of them whipped up a pair of songs called ""Bongo Rock"" and ""Bongolia."" By the middle of 1973, the songs, attributed to the Incredible Bongo Band, began to take off, both in Canada and on the U.S. R&B and pop charts, so Viner and Botkin took the concept to the next obvious level and cut an album, also titled Bongo Rock. Successful enough to scrape into the bottom of the Billboard album chart, the pair put together The Return of the Incredible Bongo Band in 1974 before fizzling out. There are some other pertinent details worth knowing, for example, that Jim Gordon, of Derek & the Dominos fame, was one of the key drummers on the project, and that Ringo Starr supposedly stopped in to bang out a few beats. But some of the best stuff happened long after the demise of the IBB, when early hip-hop DJs such as Kool DJ Herc and Grandmaster Flash, and then the Sugarhill Gang, Massive Attack and others, discovered the Incredible Bongo Band’s recordings and began using samples from them. What started as a tossed-off filler session for a crummy flick took on a life of its own. This CD reissue contains not all, but most of the tracks from the two original albums, plus two remixes, ""Apache (Grand Master Flash Remix)"" and ""Last Bongo in Belgium (Breakers Mix)."" Interesting as it is to hear how the bongo-centric beats were toyed with by the hip-hoppers, the original recordings stand up on their own as classically kitschy cheese-rock. Bongos aren’t the only sound heard, naturally, and fans of both lounge-rock and that crisp, reverby guitar sound prominent in old spy movies and Ventures records will dig what the IBB were all about. Their version of ""Apache, "" the classic ’60s instrumental made famous by the Shadows, is the equal of any other, and while that can’t be said of their takes on ""Satisfaction, "" ""Raunchy, "" ""Wipeout"" or even ""In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, "" these studio musicians — most of whom the creators of the IBB don’t recall but which may or may not have included some heavyweights — sure had a good time stepping out on their nights off. ~ Jeff Tamarkin

An impressive use of octaves and chords coupled with the rejection of a guitar pick in favor of his own thumb allowed Wes’ guitar to sing with warmth and with beauty. The lyrical rendition of ""Polka Dots And Moonbeams"" and his own ""D-Natural Blues"" are prime examples of the fullness of his lines. To this day, whenever a guitarist uses octaves he runs the risk of comparison to Wes, such was his mastery of this technique. Another aspect of his legacy is the compositions. Since their appearance on this album, ""Four On Six"" and ""West Coast Blues"" have become standard jazz repertoire. Yet to remain in awe merely of his approach is to miss the point of what he has to say. Montgomery’s technique served only to express the emotions and inspirations born from the depths of his soul. A truly delightful collection of tunes from Disney movies, reaching from the ’40s to the ’90s. And all sung by Disney "princesses, " from Ariel the Little Mermaid to Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty to Cinderella. Though perhaps targeted at girls who want to be little princesses themselves (as are the video collections), the songs appeal to anyone of any age with a romantic streak. What heart of stone wouldn’t melt at "So This Is Love, " Cinderella’s paean to a better life? Or "A Whole New World, " by Princess Jasmine and her beau, Aladdin? The list goes on and on. This is easily one of Disney’s best.

Disney Princess The Ultimate Song Collection is one of the better ideas for a Disney compilation: it’s a collection of most of the memorable songs sung by the princesses in films spanning Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to Pocahontas and Mulan. The album opens with "If You Can Dream, " a new song featuring all of the vocal talents behind the princesses in the later Disney movies. Like most diva collaborations, it’s less than the sum of its parts, with bland songwriting detracting from the performances of Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid’s Ariel), Lea Salonga (Aladdin’s Jasmine and Mulan), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas), and Paige O’Hara (Beauty and the Beast’s Belle). However, the rest of the collection is strong, serving up memorable songs from latter-day Disney films like The Little Mermaid’s "Part of Your World" and "Kiss the Girl" and The Lion King’s "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Kuhn’s performances of Pocahontas’ "Just Around the Riverbend" and "Colors of the Wind" are also standouts due to her striking voice, which is stronger and more womanly than most of the other singers who have given their voices to Disney princesses. Happily, the love songs from the studio’s classic films get their due as well: the purity and sweetness of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ "Someday My Prince Will Come, " Cinderella’s "So This Is Love, " and Sleeping Beauty’s "Once Upon a Dream" are welcome reminders of these films’ enduring quality. While it’s not as necessary as some other Disney best-ofs, Disney Princess: The Ultimate Song Collection is still a charming celebration of fairy-tale romance.
